CAN I SIT HERE?
HOSTILE ARCHITECTURE
IN PHILADELPHIA PARKS

FALL 2021-SPRING 2022

MY SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT.

THESIS:
HOSTILE ARCHITECTURE, ALSO KNOWN AS DEFENSIVE ARCHITECTURE, IS ALL AROUND US. IT SERVES TO RESTRICT PEOPLE FROM PHYSICAL SPACES, AND OFTEN TARGETS THE HOMELESS.

BY EXPOSING HOW HOSTILE ARCHITECTURE MANIFESTS IN PARKS THROUGHOUT PHILADELPHIA, WE CAN GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW “PUBLIC” THESE PARKS REALLY ARE, ADDRESS THE FAILURE OF THESE DEFENSIVE DESIGN TECHNIQUES THAT DISREGARD THE LARGER ROOT ISSUES OF HOMELESSNESS, AND RETHINK FUTURE PUBLIC SPACES TO BE INCLUSIVE FOR EVERYONE.
